Let Go
I took a train into the quiet country, searching for things that reminded me of you. Crows leapt through currents in the breeze beyond my window, flourishing at the very brink of sunrise. The golden ring circling your pupils reflected in the sky and I hoped that my memory would hold onto that colour, onto every colour of you. As I later wandered through dampened down paths, I saw you- an array of curled willow leaves brushing against each other, alive, swaying to the song of robins. I took a handful of green, combed it with my fingertips and closed my eyes. The scent of woody shampoo crept into my inhale. I tried desperately to savour that breath, imprint your smell into my lungs in hope to merge it with my cells and keep it there forever. A stream gushed through the forest floor, grinding rock into sand, as we all are ground into altered versions of ourselves overtime. Your whispers interlocked with the river’s current. Doesn’t the world just wear you down, you said, the warmth of your breath brushed my ear.
Then, the eclipse happened. A sombre wave of darkness struck the earth and suddenly, I was all alone. The depth of the forest swallowed me and when I reached for your willow I found only a vacant place, cold and hollow. When the light returned again the air had changed; every breath suffocated me. The skyline no longer bathed me in gold. The robins croaked and spluttered. A fox emerged from a grassy clearing. It sat back on its legs and blinked at me, let go, it said.
